Message from your host, Bill D.: In October, the votes in the US Senate will decide the fate of a real public option. We need to be highlighting the connections between the money the insurance industry is giving to our elected officials and how these same elected officials are voting to block real health care reform and at the same...(more) time guaranteeing that huge profits will be made by Big Insurance.
So across the United States, MoveOn is organizing hundreds of "Whose side are you on? rallies" to put pressure directly on our senate targets to side with their constituents -- not with Big Insurance. At these events, we'll release a new report detailing how much they've taken in campaign contributions from Big Insurance and other health special interests.

UNUM
http://www.unum.com/aboutus/responsibility/PublicPolicy.aspx
Public policy
We understand the critical role our products and services have in society by protecting families and individuals. That's why Unum is committed to building strong public/private partnerships that offer innovative solutions and serve the broader public good.
Sharing expertise
Unum contributes to the public discussion of disability and its complex challenges by sharing our expertise and supporting efforts to improve the handling of disability issues in the public sector. We also support policies that would make disability protection more accessible to more people.
In the U.S., we are working with the Social Security Administration, at their request, to:
Help the agency reduce their paperwork by developing a proposal to share electronic medical records of claimants. This process will also reduce workload for the agency and avoid redundant requests to claimants for information.
Assist with streamlining the agency's claims handling practices by developing a method to batch-ship disability application claims electronically.
Maximize their limited resources by providing ideas on modernization, best practices and prioritization of claims for the most severe conditions.
In the U.K., Unum:
Funds education and research at Cardiff University on issues relating to welfare reform and disability management
Launched the Beginnings initiative in 2001 to raise the awareness of disability issues among government in an effort to strengthen public policy about disabled employees in the workforce.
Lobbying congress
We are proud to have lobbied Congress to make long term care more accessible and taken the leadership in trade organizations to address disability, benefits and other policy issues
